AI shopping

When AI does the shopping, is it recommending you?

A buyer asks an assistant what to buy and gets a shortlist back. That shortlist is the whole shelf. Inciteful reads those answers — which products were named, whose brand they belong to, in which category — then writes the schema and content that make yours legible to the crawlers behind them.

7-day trial, no card. Shopify merchants can install straight from the App Store.

Why the shelf changed
01

A results page has room to spare. An answer does not.

Ranking fourth on Google still put you on the page. Coming fourth in an assistant’s shortlist usually means you were never in it.

02

AI crawlers do not run your JavaScript.

Product data that appears only after the page hydrates is invisible to them. What they read is the raw HTML your theme served.

03

Nothing in your analytics shows the shortlist.

You see the sessions that survived it. The comparison that decided them happened somewhere you have never been able to look.

What you see
Shopping queries

Track the questions that end in a purchase.

Inciteful reads your catalog and generates the buying questions a shopper actually types — about your products, and about the category they sit in. You keep the ones worth tracking, and they run automatically across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity — and Microsoft Copilot too, on Pro and Agency — with Claude, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Microsoft Copilot available per client.

Shopping questions get their own section in the client report, because “is our product recommended” and “is our brand mentioned” are two different sales conversations.

Generated from the catalog
  • Is [product] worth buying?
  • What is the best [product type] to buy?
  • What are the best [collection] in 2026?
  • Which [collection] should you buy?

The real templates the generator fills from your products and collections — no placeholders reach the tracker.

Brands in product answers

See whose products own the shelf.

Every product named across the stored answers is attributed to the brand behind it and ranked by share. Your row is pinned and badged, so the question “are we on this shelf at all” takes one glance rather than a spreadsheet.

A product name is never promoted into the brand board. The board ranks makers, under the same alias and exact-match discipline the rest of the platform uses — “Compact Flight Case” is a product, not a rival company, and a board that cannot tell the difference is not evidence.

#Rank by share of the product mentions read.
BrandThe maker, with its own mark. Your row carries a “You” badge.
SharePercentage of named products belonging to that brand.
ProductsHow many distinct products of theirs were named.
Products, categories, answers

Read the answer that named the product.

The products board lists every product an assistant put in front of a buyer, with its maker, the engine that named it and how many times it came up. Categories group them by what they are. And the responses log holds the answers themselves — grouped by prompt, in the assistant’s own words.

Counts are always stated against the answers the extraction actually read, never against the whole stored corpus. A number that quietly spans more than it looked at is a corpus count wearing a shopping label.

What it will not do

No placeholder product shots

Images, prices and ratings come from a paid product lookup. Where it is not enabled the cell reads as a dash — which means we have not bought it, not that it is zero.

Absent, not empty

Shopping only appears for clients that actually sell products. A consultancy never sees a permanently empty tab, because the tab is not there.

Silence is a finding

If the answers name no products at all, it says so: that is a real result, not a gap — AI is answering that market in prose rather than product tiles, and that changes what you build.

What it writes back

AI Shopping is a separate retained product from Content v2. Its Product Q&A, Collection guides, and Product/Collection metafield workflows remain available alongside the web-content workflow and use the same monthly content-generation allowance.

Schema, server-side

Structured data the crawlers can actually read.

Inciteful writes Product, Offer, FAQ, Breadcrumb and Collection JSON-LD into your store’s metafields, rendered server-side by a theme app extension — so it is in the raw HTML, not behind a script that never runs.

Every write is recorded in a ledger and Revert removes only the fields Inciteful owns. Ratings are emitted from real review data or withheld entirely; an invented rating is a legal problem wearing a schema tag.

Grounded product content

Answers about your products, from your catalog.

Buyer Q&A per product and “best X for Y” buying guides per collection, generated from the live catalog rather than from a model’s memory of your category.

Each answer is verified against the product it describes before anything is written. What fails the check is reported back as blocked and never reaches the storefront — the same integrity gate the rest of the engine runs under.

How grounding works
Shopify

Listed on the App Store. Installed in a click.

Install from Shopify and a workspace is created for the store automatically — catalog connected, no keys to copy. Agencies can link a store to the account they already run their clients from.

Not on Shopify? Everything above works from the app, with exports and the action plan for the writing half.

  1. Install and connect

Approve the app in your Shopify admin; the catalog is read through the Admin API.

  2. Optimise the pages

Pick products or collections and write the schema — non-destructive, ledgered, reversible.

  3. Answer the buying questions

Generate product Q&A and collection guides, grounded in the catalog and verified before they land.

  4. Track the shelf

Shopping queries run automatically, and the report shows whether the recommendation was yours.

The platform underneath

Shopping sits on top of this.

The product boards are the store-specific layer. Underneath is the same answer-tracking surface every client gets — live, below.

The fixture is a design studio, so it shows brands rather than products. For a store, the boards above sit on the same answers.

FAQ

What store owners ask first.

Do I have to be on Shopify?

No. The measurement side reads AI answers, not your platform, and it opens for any client detected as a storefront — Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento and the rest — or whose answers already name products repeatedly. Shopify is the only platform where Inciteful can also write back automatically; elsewhere you publish through WordPress or an export.

Do I need an Inciteful account before I install?

No. Installing from the App Store provisions a workspace for the store. If you are an agency and already run clients here, you can link the store to your existing account from inside the app instead.

Will it touch my theme or rewrite my product copy?

No. Schema is written into Inciteful’s own metafields and rendered by a theme app extension; your product descriptions are not edited. Every write is ledgered and Revert removes only what Inciteful put there.

Why are there no product images or prices?

Because those come from a paid product-data lookup that is not switched on. Rather than show a placeholder image or a rating we cannot source, the tile stays typed and the cell stays an em-dash. A dash here means unbought, not zero.

Which assistants are checked?

ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity on every plan, automatically. Claude, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Microsoft Copilot are add-ons you switch on for the clients that need them, priced per client per month. Pro and Agency include Microsoft Copilot as a core engine; on Solo it is a $9 per-client add-on.

Do shopping questions use my tracked-question allowance?

Yes — they are tracked questions like any other, drawn from the same account-wide pool, so you can spend it on a store’s buying questions or a service client’s comparison questions as the month demands.
